Semester 2 - Spelling

Semester Two Spelling

Dear Parents,

During the first semester, we have been implementing the Sound Waves spelling program in our classrooms. So far, we can see that the program has been very effective in assisting students to identify sounds in words and the different ways they can be represented.

In Semester two, we will be making some minor adjustments to our weekly spelling word procedures in order to enhance its effectiveness. Current research tells us that students in the early years of school (Prep to Year 2) learn to spell more effectively if the words are linked to rich texts. During our writing workshops at the beginning of each week, we will be identifying 5 words from our weekly key text/big book for the students to practice throughout the week both at home and at school. These words will be based on the Sound Waves sound for the week and extension words will be provided for those students who regularly spell all of their words correctly during the Friday spelling test.

These words will be sent home at the beginning of each week in your child’s homework book. The sound will also be highlighted as part of this process. It would be greatly appreciated if you could continue to help your child to practice these words as part their homework each week.

We look forward to working with you as we develop the spelling skills of the students in our classrooms.

Kind regards,

Year 1 & Year 2 Teachers.
